Amon Nyx is a Sydney-based collaboration as they embrace meditative mark-making on salvaged fabrics, taking these singular insignificant fragments and gathering them together into a collaborative whole. Like tiny cells building a bigger body, they are stitched together, creating order from the accidental. Part of the Ambedo collective, they join together as a testament to connetion.
Art is participation in creation. Not a record of it, participation. When a subject is drawn accurately something shifts: there is confirmation that it was actually seen. Drawing is the proof of looking. The hand is the check on the eye. A piece is a claim. It says I met this thing, I saw not just its surface but what it is. To paint something with sincerity you must have really encountered it. The accuracy is neccacary but secondary. The encounter is the work. Lately that has meant birds, because they have access to a part of creation we will never enter the way they do. There is something about painting them that feels like an attempt to get closer to that.
Skill and expression are tied at the hip and so the pursuit of the perfect creative expression is done through dedication to technical mastery. every time you draw to take the gamble of walking on the edge between beauty and disappointment drives and this is our pursuit.
